EA’s retreat from mobile continues with the closure of The Simpsons: Tapped Out

EA just announced its fifth mobile game closure this year with the sunsetting of The Simpsons: Tapped Out.

As spotted by VGC, EA posted the announcement on the game’s Facebook page. In-app purchases have already been disabled, and the game will be removed from app stores on October 31. The servers will be closed permanently on January 24, 2025.

“The decision to end our twelve-year journey is an emotional one,” said the EA statement. “Together with our partners at The Simpsons™ and The Walt Disney company, we have delighted in bringing this game to you, the fans, and seeing how you’ve each built your own beloved versions of Springfield.”

“It has been a remarkable journey, and we are grateful that we’ve been able to deliver 308 updates, 831 characters and including today’s final farewell 1,463 questlines.”

From last week: ‘EA only plans to make “concentrated bets” in mobile following a flurry of cancellations‘.

This is the latest EA mobile game cancellation following the publishing giant’s decision earlier this year to merge its mobile teams into its ‘HD’ counterparts and closed several games. The Simpsons: Tapped Out joins Kim Kardashian Hollywood, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth, Tap Sports Baseball and F1 Mobile as having been closed by EA in 2024.

This year’s cull followed January 2023’s cancellation of Apex Legends Mobile, Battlefield Mobile, and the shuttering of mobile studio Industrial Toys. (We later discussed the demise of Battlefield Mobile studio Industrial Toys with studio founder Alex Seropian.)

As we reported last week, EA mentioned its mobile efforts very briefly during its recent investor day, stating that it would only be making “concentrated bets” on standalone mobile titles going forwards.
