French hybridcasual studio 8SEC is closing

French mobile game company 8SEC is closing down after ten years.

Cofounder Louis Croquet confirmed to us that 8SEC’s seven staff are now seeking new roles, including cofounders Croquet and Louis Giraud.

The studio behind Hero Squad, Trivia.io, Exfil: Loot & Extract and Idle Army landed a €1.5m investment from UK publisher Kwalee in January 2024. Under the terms of that agreement, Kwalee CFO Matthew Farrow and then-VP of mobile publishing John Wright joined the 8SEC board.

8SEC published over 90 mobile games during its ten year run and said it has generated over 50m downloads across its portfolio. It described itself as an early adopter of hybridcasual games and had offices in Lyon and Paris. Kwalee took up publishing duties on all 8SEC games after the investment in January 2024.

“After 10 amazing years, 8SEC is closing its doors,” said Croquet on LinkedIn, who also thanked cofounder Louis Giraud, financier Olivier Martret at investor Serena and his now-former colleagues at Kwalee.

He added later: “It did not work out the way we planned but I’m still absolutely passionate about mobile gaming. The market is packed with opportunities, and I’m already eyeing what’s next.”
