Netflix has closed Boss Fight, maker of Squid Game: Unleashed

Netflix has closed the studio behind Squid Game: Unleashed, Boss Fight, according to multiple LinkedIn posts from company leadership.

We have asked Netflix for comment, but the company did not reply in time for publication. We will update this story if or when the company does offer a statement.

Boss Fight told us in December 2024 that Squid Game: Unleashed was in development for around two years, and was worked on by around 100 developers in total.

It’s unclear how many of those staff were full time at Boss Fight, but according to LinkedIn there are around 80 staff working at the company currently. It’s not yet clear if those staff will be laid off or moved elsewhere within Netflix’s gaming division.

Boss Fight CEO and cofounder David Rippy said on LinkedIn: “Word has gotten around quickly about Boss Fight’s closure. Thanks, everyone who reached out today. Rough news, for sure, but I’m very grateful for the time we had at Netflix. We worked with some awesome people and made many games that I’m very proud of, including Squid Game Unleashed which hit #1 in 26 countries.”

Netflix games development director David Luehmann added: “After 10+ great years working at Boss Fight, the last few as part of Netflix, the time has come for the studio to close down. I am very proud of all the people, work, and games we’ve released. I wish you could see what we had cooking!”

Design director Damion Schubert added: “It’s wild that my time at Boss Fight has come to an end. I spent 10 years there and we did some awesome stuff, and as always, it’s infuriating that the world will never see some of the stuff that was shuffled away behind the scenes.”

Netflix acquired Boss Fight in 2022, one of the streaming giant’s first big acquisitions which have also included Next Games, Spry Fox and Night School Studios.
