Nintendo to launch new photo-based game Pictonico on May 28

Nintendo has revealed a new photo-based game for mobile phones called Pictonico.

It’s coming to the App Store and Google Play on May 28, and looks a little like a spin on WarioWare that uses photos from your camera roll. It has been codeveloped with longtime Nintendo partner Intelligent Systems, which also codevelops the WarioWare games.

The game is ‘free-to-start’, meaning players can access a few minigames for free but must unlock the full game by purchasing ‘volumes’ of content. The App Store lists two IAPs, with ‘volume 1’ at $7.99 and ‘volume 2’ at $5.99.

Here’s the trailer:

Last year, with the impending arrival of Switch 2, it looked like Nintendo had given up on its mobile games. But Nintendo later said in a February 2025 earnings call that it is still actively working on new mobile games and apps.

In September 2025, it surprise-launched Fire Emblem Shadows, which got a poor reception from critics and has not fared well commercially.

Nintendo has instead released more apps and playthings in recent months and years, adding the Nintendo Music app, the calendar and news service Nintendo Today and kids apps Hello, Mario and Hello, Yoshi, which allow players to mess around with the titular characters’ faces.

Our last check-in on Nintendo’s mobile portfolio was in October 2025, shortly after the launch of Fire Emblem Shadows. At that time, Sensor Tower estimates suggested the Japanese giant had generated nearly $2.3bn and over 816m downloads on iOS and Android since the launch of Super Mario Run in September 2016.
