Supercell’s Squad Busters launches globally on May 29

Supercell has confirmed that its IP mash-up Squad Busters will be launched worldwide on May 29. Pre-orders are open now on the App Store and Google Play.

The news was confirmed through a YouTube video, a blog, an App Store Today story and pocketgamer.biz interview, all pushed live at the same time.

In an interview with pocketgamer.biz, Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen said:

“Most people who know Supercell know they are famous for killing a lot of games, and the reason why our game teams kill so many games is that they hold themselves accountable to a very, very high bar of creating great games.”

The game entered soft launch in Canada, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Mexico and Singapore this week.

Yesterday, we published some first impressions of that soft launch build from several different industry experts, who came away impressed.

Supercell describes the game in the blog announcing the date as having started with a simple idea: “What if you could mix and match different characters from different genres and universes and see how they work together?”

From yesterday: ‘Going global? First impressions of Squad Busters’ soft launch‘.

“We wanted to create a game that was fun, creative, and diverse, and that gave you the freedom to customize your squad to suit your play style and preferences,” the blog continues.

“Our goal has been to make it very easy for anyone to start playing Squad Busters, but also include depth of skill and strategy that you can discover as you play the game more. Balancing these two sides of it has been a big challenge for us – it’s very easy to lean too far to either side. Our approach has been to constantly iterate and try out different mechanics, features and concepts until we find the right mix. ”

From February 2023: ‘Is Squad Busters Supercell’s next multi-billion dollar smash?‘.

As we reported in yesterday’s story, Supercell has been teasing this launch for months, if not years. Boss Ilkka Paananen said in early 2023 that of the games in development, Squad Busters was “furthest along”.

Supercell’s community team has also been publishing multiple slick teaser videos for Squad Busters, and even joked about ‘breaking the curse’ of Supercell games failing to launch globally.

The company also appears to have seeded multiple influencers with access to the game before this week to produce videos in time for the soft launch, and the game is being promoted at London consumer games show WASD this week.
