Scopely just added over 400 new staff after its $3.5bn acquisition of Niantic’s games business officially closed today.
The deal includes Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Go and Niantic’s Campfire and Wayfarer apps. Together, Scopely says the Niantic gaming portfolio reaches over 30m monthly active users and drove more than $1bn in revenue last year.
“We are proud to share that we closed the acquisition of Niantic’s game business on May 29, 2025,” said Scopely in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming over 400 of Niantic’s world-class gamemakers to our global team, where they will continue to serve their incredible community of players.”
Bloomberg first reported that a Scopely-Niantic deal was in the offing back in February. The $3.5bn deal was confirmed in March, leaving Niantic’s other live games, Ingress and Peridot, in the hands of what is now Niantic Spatial, led by Niantic founder and CEO John Hanke.
Back in March Scopely co-CEOs Javier Ferreira and Walter Driver promised players that Niantic’s game teams will continue to be led by longtime studio leaders Kei Kawai and Ed Wu. It also reassured the player community that the games would continue to operate largely as they did before.
The co-CEOs also appeared to tease further M&A to come. “We are continually looking for industry- and category-leading products that complement our expertise and portfolio,” they said. “Just last year, we met with over 800 companies, assessing many products, teams, and technology.”
