Game developers using Unity will soon be able to run their own webshops across platforms thanks to a new partnership with payments giant Stripe.
Unity joins Epic and the likes of Xsolla, Appcharge, FastSpring, Stash and more in the race to take full advantage of Apple and Google’s looser grip on app store payments.
Unity’s webshop services are currently in limited early access, and the firm is partnering with select customers to get it ready for a full launch. There’s no firm date on when that will be, but developers can register their interest in the product with Unity now.
The new webshops feature “will enable game developers to manage their entire global commerce and catalog from a single dashboard within Unity itself,” the company said.
“Today, selling across platforms means juggling multiple SDKs, rules, and payout systems. With this enhancement, developers will be able to combine different payment providers, optimise for different markets, and manage pricing, promotions, and live operations across mobile app stores, web, and PC, free from any platform-specific tools and restrictions.”
Unity president and CEO Matt Bromberg added: “The vast majority of games-related IAP transactions happen inside games made with Unity. Soon developers will have a single place to manage and optimise their entire digital catalog across all platforms and devices.”
“Unity is dedicated to putting developers in control of their own success wherever their players are,” he added. “Programmable financial services company Stripe is the first of the partnerships that will ultimately offer developers complete flexibility and coverage in payments globally.”
