What’s going on inside Supercell’s AI lab?

Supercell is working on “AI companions that live in Discord and play Minecraft with you”, an Animal Crossing-like game with AI NPCs and a game in which character classes and weapons are generated during play.

That’s according to Supercell’s AI Innovation Lab boss Jessica Jung, the former Niantic product manager who, as we reported recently, joined the Clash of Clans maker to head up the firm’s push into AI games.

Other projects potentially in the works at Supercell could include “a dating sim with AI powered companions”, “an RPG with an AI-powered vast open world” and a “new social media platform for gen AI content”, according to its AI Innovation Lab webpage.

Jung said on X that Supercell is hunting for “startups working in AI x games to come build the next $1bn+ gaming product”. The company will cover “All expenses (housing, meals, compute)” for those in the program, she said.

She continued: “Our focus is exploring novel AI gameplay where AI is at the core of the interaction loop (e.g. Suck Up, AI Dungeon) but we’re open minded towards all types of gaming products.”

Elsewhere today, Supercell also confirmed the appointment of Drussila Hollanda as the company’s first head of new games. Hollanda was previously a game lead on Hay Day, and later founded developer Papukaya. She also worked at coding school Hive, Digital Chocolate, Rovio and Wooga.
