2024’s top mobile game downloads (so far)

Now we’ve got six months of 2024 data, let’s have a little dig through Appmagic and see where we’re at.

Remember, these download numbers are estimates, but are still indicative of the broad shape and size of things.

There are some usual suspects here that seem destined to stick around forever, especially the top two: Roblox and Subway Surfers. Roblox continues to rise when you zoom out and look at the trendline over several years, but Subway Surfers is as steady as ever.

Kudos to low-key game-maker Hungry Studio. Its flagship game Block Blast is the third most downloaded game of 2024 so far, and even appears to have spooked the company behind actual Tetris to make a copycat of Block Blast, which is amusing.

Supercent’s Pizza Ready is also one of the star performers for 2024 so far. One might think it is emblematic of the hybridcasual scene at large with its simple character models, bold primary colours, slightly more complex gameplay and monetisation mix.

But other games claiming to be hyper or hybridcasual are no longer the force they once were: while seventh-placed game Wood Nuts and Bolts sits loosely in that category, games like Build A Queen, Race Master 3D and Going Balls have fallen out of the top ten, and there are no other truly new hyper/hybridcasual contenders to speak of.

Free Fire and Free Fire Max saw huge download spikes in January and April, which seems to have put the game(s) on the comeback trail after steadily losing momentum over time. Free Fire Max, weirdly, has maintained that download momentum after April, but Free Fire has not.

Royal Match is a slightly odd one: there were monstrous spikes in January and February – over 18m installs in both months – but March-June saw the game dip dramatically again to between 8-11m monthly downloads. Perhaps Dream Games’ strategy is based on big, brief bursts of UA spend…?

Miniclip’s cash cow 8 Ball Pool has never really gone away, but it’s worth noting that the game saw huge spikes at the end of 2023, and another in March 2024. These were up in the 13-14m range, enough of a rise above its usual 10m-ish downloads per month to push it into the top ten.

2024’s top downloads games so far: 11-20

11. Build A Queen (Supersonic): 65m
12. Race Master 3D (SayGames): 60m
13. Brawl Stars (Supercell): 59m
14. My Talking Tom 2 (Outfit7): 58m
15. PUBG Mobile (Tencent): 58m
16. Candy Crush Saga (King): 57.8m
17. My Talking Tom Friends (Outfit7): 55m
18. Going Balls (Supersonic): 50.2m
19. Wood Screw Puzzle (Zego Studio): 50m
20. Magic Tiles 3 (Amanotes): 49.9m

Build A Queen was getting around 11m downloads per month from January to April, but has tailed off a little in the last two months and ends up in 11th. Race Master 3D dipped a little in March, but is back up to just over 10m monthly installs.

Brawl Stars’ well-documented comeback saw Supercell’s arena brawler up significantly from an average of 2.5-3m installs per month throughout 2023 to between 8-12m in the first half of 2024.

Outfit7 duo My Talking Tom 2 and My Talking Tom Friends are both very steady indeed, but the latter title is the one rising long-term, rising gently and consistently from 7.5m downloads per month in January to 10.6m in June.

PUBG Mobile is also up a little for the first half of 2024. It has plateaued a little throughout 2021-2023, regularly attracting 7-8m downloads per month, but is now pulling in 8-10m.

Candy Crush Saga is noticeably down on what was a stellar first half of 2023. King’s puzzler is now firmly in the 8-10m monthly downloads bracket, where in the first half of 2023 it bounced between a huge peak of 17m installs per month to a low of 12m. It also declined pretty rapidly in the second half of 2023, but has recovered a little for the first six months of 2024.

Zego Studio’s Wood Screw Puzzle is one of very few new entries in 18th spot, while Amanotes’ consistently popular music game Magic Tiles 3 is up a little compared to the first half of 2023. It is regularly pulling in over 7m monthly downloads after a big spike in January that brought in nearly 10m downloads in a month.
