Epic has confirmed that its mobile Games Store has now been downloaded 40m times since launch in August 2024 – some way off the 100m it targeted for the end of 2024.
It has also delayed the launch of its webshop program to July, having previously announced it was coming in June.
Epic’s mobile Games Store launched worldwide on Android and in the EU only on iOS in August 2024. At Epic’s State of Unreal keynote today, Epic Games Store boss Steve Allison and later CEO Tim Sweeney said that its storefront – and Fortnite – are also coming to Brazil, UK and Japan later this year, as local laws force Apple to open up its ecosystem. It now hosts 70 games, Epic said today.
Epic also stated in the keynote that self-publishing on the mobile store is coming later this year, and re-stated its ‘zero commission’ policy. In short, all developers keep 100% of each game’s Epic Games Store revenue up to the first million. After that, Epic takes a 12% cut.
Epic Games Store boss Allison also said that players will accrue Epic Rewards points for all transactions through its webshop program, which is now coming in July.
Wrapping up the keynote, Tim Sweeney referenced the recent court ruling that cracked open the App Store and allowed Epic to release Fortnite, complete with web payments, in the US for the first time in five years.
“That court decision was a huge victory for all developers, not only for Fortnite, and it means that now revenue is shifting away from useless gatekeepers and middlemen to developers who actually build this stuff. People like us.”
Sweeney continued: “And this trend toward open platforms is spreading around the world. Later this year Fortnite will be returning to iOS in Brazil, the United Kingdom and Japan. And we’ll keep fighting for Fortnite and for developer freedom until all apps are free worldwide.”
