Lifetime Netflix Games downloads pass 210m, GTA: San Andreas hits 25m, says Appmagic

Lifetime Netflix game downloads now total over 210m and the service’s top title, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, has just passed 25m installs.

That’s according to the latest numbers from Appmagic, sourced by mobilegamer.biz. As we previously reported, Netflix’s GTA Trilogy hit an estimated 30m installs in June. Today, that total stands at 36.6m, with San Andreas on over 25.2m downloads to date, Vice City at 7.8m installs and GTA 3 on 3.6m.

Rockstar’s remastered PS2-era trio GTA: San Andreas, GTA: Vice City and GTA III were released through Netflix on December 14 2023. They had racked up over 18m downloads combined by the end of January.

Here are the top ten Netflix games by lifetime downloads, according to Appmagic:

The rankings have not changed a huge amount since our last look at this data back in May. Annapurna’s user-created narrative game Storyteller remains something of a surprise hit for Netflix, having now passed an estimated 15m downloads. It is way ahead of third placed game Spongebob: Get Cooking which is on 10.7m installs.

The only new entry in the top ten is Giant Software’s Farming Simulator 23, which has now racked up an estimated 5.8m installs since its arrival on Netflix Games in November last year.

Netflix Games lifetime downloads: 11-20

11. Scriptic Netflix Edition (Scriptic): 5.2m
12. Stranger Things 3: The Game (BonusXP): 4m
13. Too Hot To Handle 2 (Nanobit): 3.8m
14. GTA III (Rockstar): 3.6m
15. Netflix Stories (Boss Fight): 3.58m
16. Sonic Prime Dash (Sega Hardlight): 3.2m
17. Classic Solitaire (MobilityWare): 3.2m
18. Twelve Minutes (Annapurna): 3.17m
19. Exploding Kittens (Direwolf): 3.1m
20. TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge (Playdigious): 2.9m

The notable new entries in the 11-20 bracket are Netflix Stories in 15th and Classic Solitaire in 17th, each game loosely emblematic of Netflix’s more recent focus on story-driven and classic game releases. Sonic Prime Dash has also moved up the rankings since our last look at this data.

To get a sense of what’s popular now, let’s also look at the last 30 days of Netflix game downloads, again as estimated by Appmagic:

Of the more recent releases we can see that reality TV show tie-in Too Hot To Handle 3, evergreen puzzler Ludo King, casual stalwart Snake.io and retro revival Sonic Mania Plus are resonating best.

Again, these are broadly in line with what appears to be Netflix’s more recent focus: releasing games with very broad casual appeal, or story-driven games that lean on Netflix IP.

Back in July, Netflix Games appointed a new president, former Epic Games first party development boss Alain Tascan. Tascan stepped into the shoes of former Netflix Games president Mike Verdu, who stepped sideways into a newly-formed ‘game innovation’ team.

From July: ‘Former Epic VP Alain Tascan is the new boss at Netflix Games‘.

New Netflix boss Tascan reports directly to Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters, and at his previous employer Epic, Tascan was EVP of game development, responsible for first party game development including Fortnite, Lego Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys.

Netflix was one of few mobile game presences at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event last month, where it first showcased forthcoming exclusive Monument Valley 3 and its Squid Game tie-in.

The first Monument Valley title is coming to Netflix on September 19, and the sequel is arriving on Netflix on October 29. Monument Valley 3 completes the trilogy on December 10 – you can read more about the title and its creator Ustwo Games here.
