Monument Valley 3 is coming to Netflix on December 10

Monument Valley 3 is coming to Netflix on December 10, UK studio Ustwo Games has announced.

The third game in the series was revealed for the first time during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The announcement says it is “launching first on Netflix Games”, which suggests it will be released on other platforms at some point after December 10.

The new game appears to be less linear than the previous two games, as it invites players to sail around in a boat and explore “sprawling cities” and “quaint coastal towns”.

Netflix also confirmed release dates for the existing Monument Valley games. The first title is coming to the service on September 19, and the sequel is arriving on Netflix on October 29. MV3 completes the trilogy on December 10.

As we reported back in March 2022, Monument Valley 3 is helmed by Jennifer Estaris, a veteran game designer and climate activist who has worked at Sybo, Disney and Nickelodeon.

From March 2022: ‘Monument Valley 3 goes green with director Jennifer Estaris‘.

It is likely to touch upon environmental themes – Estaris told us in March 2022 that “Monument Valley’s ongoing themes of impossibility and architecture have many similarities to sustainability topics” and she noted that the studio had previously “explored deeper nature themes” in Monument Valley 2’s Lost Forest expansion.

Later in 2022, Ustwo told us that MV3 didn’t have a fixed platform just yet. We also speculated that Apple Arcade and Netflix could be willing to fight over exclusive rights – a battle presumably won by Netflix after it published Desta: The Memories Between. Netflix later announced that it would be adding the first two Monument Valley games to the service in March 2023.

From September 2022: ‘Netflix game Desta marks a new era at Ustwo – and Monument Valley 3, free-to-play are next‘.

Ustwo chief creative officer Danny Gray told us in September 2022: “We were already making [Desta] and we were speaking to Apple for Arcade and trying to figure it out and then Netflix contacted us.”

“As soon as we started talking to them, they were just really, really excited to try and start something and figure out what this cool new platform they had was.”
