Red Dead Redemption passes 3.3m Netflix downloads while paid game struggles past 10k

Rockstar western Red Dead Redemption arrived on mobile devices just over a month ago. So how’s it doing?

Since it launched as a premium game and for ‘free’ through Netflix on December 2, Appmagic estimates suggest that the $39.99 premium game has earned Rockstar about $430k – that’s about 10,750 downloads. The ‘free’ Netflix edition has around 3.3m installs to date.

The Netflix Games edition was announced as part of the big reboot in November, and so inevitably that edition, free to all players with an active Netflix subscription, took the largest share of downloads.

3.3m downloads through Netflix in just over five weeks makes it one of the biggest new games to arrive on Netflix since the remastered PS2-era GTA games were added to the service in December 2023. San Andreas was the most popular of that trio by far, but all three GTA games have since been removed from Netflix Games.

As for the premium game, around 10,750 downloads and $430k in earnings over five weeks is obviously peanuts compared to most free to play games – the likes of Clash of Clans generally clear well over $430k in a single day.

Nonetheless, even with that Netflix edition stealing away many potential customers, Red Dead Redemption has performed better than some other notable recent console-to-mobile flops, including several Resident Evil games and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

As we have reported before, porting a catalogue console game over to mobile and charging a premium price does not appear to be working. Estimates suggest that Resident Evil 2 struggled to $100k in its first month, while under 3,000 people paid $49.99 to play Assassin’s Creed Mirage on iPhone in its first few weeks on the market (though it is only playable on the very latest iPhones and iPads).

The most recent title to try this approach was Hitman: World of Assassination, which has generated just over $130k from 226k downloads since it arrived on mobile in August 2025, according to Appmagic. It launched on iOS as a free-to-start game, meaning it is free to download but there is a $70 paywall to access the full game.
