Resident Evil 2 struggles to $100k as triple-A flops continue

Capcom’s grim record of iOS flops has continued. Its latest launch, Resident Evil 2, has only just passed $100k in IAP earnings since launch on December 10 2024.

It is only playable on high-end iOS devices, and has been featured prominently in Apple keynotes and on the App Store. It is a ‘free-to-start’ game that offers a short free demo, then presents the player with an IAP paywall to unlock the rest of the game.

From December 10 to January 8, that IAP unlock was discounted to $10, and made Capcom $95k in that time, according to Appmagic estimates. That means around 9,500 people bought the IAP to proceed through the paywall.

Since January 9, the game has been back at full price, $40, and has made Capcom just over $7k. This means roughly 175 people have paid the $40 IAP to unlock the full game in that time.

From June 2024: ‘Those Assassin’s Creed, Resident Evil and Death Stranding ports have bombed‘.

It’s the latest triple-A console game to make its way over to iOS and bomb. Back in June 2024, we reported on Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding and Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s extremely poor performance on iOS since their respective launches.

We also ran the numbers on the iOS launch of Resident Evil 7 a couple of weeks later, which has fared even worse.

Indeed, Assassin’s Creed Mirage has continued to register very few paying customers, and is also only playable on high-end iOS devices. Despite being promoted by Apple in keynotes and on the App Store, Appmagic data says total lifetime revenue since launch in June 2024 stands at just $496k. That means roughly 9,920 people have paid $50 to unlock the full game.

Appmagic estimates put Resident Evil 4 lifetime revenue at $530k since it launched on high-end iPhones and iPads in December 2023. The ‘base game’ IAP is currently $60, meaning the game has attracted just 8,833 paying customers in over a year on the market.

From July 2024: ‘Under 2,000 people have paid to play Resident Evil 7 on iOS, estimates say‘.

Resident Evil Village, released in October 2023, has earned Capcom an estimated $300k, meaning around 7,500 players have paid to unlock the full game.

Resident Evil 7, meanwhile, is the biggest bomb by far – Appmagic estimates suggest its has earned just $84k since its release on iOS in July 2024. The full game unlock is $20, meaning roughly 4,200 players have paid to progress past the paywall.

Death Stranding, another game featured prominently in Apple keynotes to showcase the tech giant’s new chips, has so far earned publisher 505 Games $581k, according to Appmagic estimates. It is a premium game, with a $40 price upfront, which has attracted around 14,525 paying customers to date, according to the data.
