Unity hires ex-King, Havok exec Steve Collins as new CTO

Unity has a new chief technology officer in former King and Havok exec Steve Collins.

He effectively replaces former chief product and technology officer Marc Whitten, who resigned over the summer following a period of turbulence that also saw CEO and president John Riccitiello, CMO Carol Carpenter and all of IronSource’s founders leave after the Runtime Fee fiasco.

Collins now joins CEO Matthew Bromberg on the new-look leadership team at Unity, and brings with him decades of experience.

From Tuesday: ‘Inside Unity’s troubled $4.4bn IronSource merger‘.

Most recently Collins was CTO at King and was previously co-founder and CTO of Havok. He has also served as CTO at marketing firm Swrve, founded the computer graphics research group at Trinity College Dublin and launched its MSc program in computer game technology.

Unity president and CEO Matt Bromberg said: “We’re elated to have Steve join us at this pivotal time. He has deep technical expertise in both gaming and marketing technology and he understands what developers need. Steve will play a key role as we continue to deliver more innovation, quality, and stability to our customers.”

From Monday: ‘Costly Unity Ads crash shakes dev confidence again: “What the f**k is going on over there?”

Collins said: “I’ve followed Unity for nearly two decades as it changed the world of games and real-time 3D content development, enabling creators to realize their artistic visions and reach global audiences across a wide range of devices. I’m super excited to be joining the very talented team behind the Unity Engine, and I look forward to helping make Unity an even better partner for its community.”

Collins will be looking to steady the ship after this week’s reports of technical problems with the Unity Ads SDK and the troubled $4.4bn merger of adtech firm IronSource.
