Mighty Doom developer Alpha Dog Games is back and looking for work.
The Nova Scotia-based studio was acquired by ZeniMax Media, Bethesda’s parent company, in October 2019, then became part of Xbox Game Studios after Microsoft completed the acquisition of ZeniMax for $7.5bn.
However, Alpha Dog was closed down in sweeping cuts by parent company Microsoft in 2024 at the same time Microsoft shut down Arkane Austin and sold Tango Gameworks. As a result, Alpha Dog was shuttered and its biggest title, Mighty Doom, pulled from mobile stores.
As spotted by Vice, studio founder Shawn Woods has updated his LinkedIn profile claiming that as of May 2025, Alpha Dog Games was “independently owned, again.”
The news has since been formally confirmed by a statement made to Kotaku.
“It’s true that Alpha Dog Games is once again independently owned by its founders,” said Woods. “We’re incredibly excited to have the name we put so much effort and pride into building back in our hands.”
“First and foremost, we’re grateful to Microsoft for working with us through the transition and enabling Alpha Dog Games to return to independent ownership. It means a great deal to have the opportunity to continue the studio’s legacy, which began in 2012.”
Over the last few months, the team has invested in the studio’s technology to give it “a strong starting point as we consider what comes next,” added Woods.
He declined to provide details on specific plans, but said that the excitement about the studio’s return had been “humbling.”
Alpha Dog is presently open to opportunities from partners, publishers and licensors.
According to AppMagic, Mighty Doom made around $7m in revenue since its launch in March 2023, with over 7.4m lifetime downloads.
