Fortnite is finally returning to the Australian App Store.
Fortnite relaunched on the US App Store in May 2025 after a US judge ordered Apple to resolve its issues with developer Epic over releasing Fortnite on the US App Store, or explain itself in court. It then returned to most other territories in May, but Epic kept Fortnite off the Australian App Store while seeking further orders relating to Apple’s payment terms.
Now, in a statement on social media, Epic said the Australian Federal Court had told Apple to open up iOS after finding they violated competition law, calling it “great news for developers worldwide and iOS users in Australia who will benefit from an open mobile app ecosystem”.
“Here’s what’s changing in Australia in March 2027,” the statement explained. “iOS will be open to third party app stores, Australian users will be able to download apps directly from developers, [and] developers will be able to offer only alternative payment systems and Apple can’t require devs to offer Apple’s IAP, without charging junk fees.
“Apple cannot block developers from pointing users outside apps to make purchases [and] Apple is barred from charging junk fees on purchases made in third party app stores.”
In March 2024, Apple terminated Epic Games’ EU developer account on the grounds that it had proven itself an untrustworthy partner in the past. After the move drew the attention of the European Commission, Apple reinstated the account and allowed Epic Sweden to release the Epic Games Store, complete with Fortnite, as planned.
