May’s top grossing mobile games worldwide

Here are last month’s top grossing mobile games worldwide, according to Appmagic data.

There’s commentary on which way these top earners are trending and other interesting tidbits from outside the top ten and beyond below.

You can also find the top grossing rankings for JanuaryFebruaryMarch and April for comparison through the links.

Hoyoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail has broken Honor of Kings’ lengthy streak at the summit of the monthly top grossing charts.

It was December 2022 the last time Honor of Kings wasn’t the top grossing game of the month – the result of a revenue blip for the Tencent-made MOBA plus a seasonal boost for Genshin Impact and PUBG Mobile.

Honor of Kings has actually been trending downwards slightly since it was regularly earning $150-160m per month in the first half of 2022.

There’s another juicy sub-plot to Honkai: Star Rail’s blockbuster debut, too. Fellow Hoyoverse game Genshin Impact’s monthly revenue is down significantly month-on-month, from $82.3m in April to $49.7m in May.

Is newbie Star Rail stealing away Genshin’s biggest spenders? Or are there other factors at play here? We’ll have a clearer picture if the trend continues next month.

The next four regular top grossers, Candy Crush Saga, PUBG Mobile, Roblox and Coin Master are all down month-on-month. PUBG Mobile took the biggest hit, posting a $10m revenue decline from April to May. The others are down by a million or two each.

Dream Games’ Royal Match continues to grow, though. Just like its performance in the download charts, it just keeps ticking upwards and posted its third straight month of steady growth.

Playrix’s Gardenscapes also continues to gently trend upwards, a third straight month of revenue growth which passed $40m for the first time since March 2021.

Niantic’s Pokémon Go has also recovered a little from a drop to $30m in monthly revenue in April. You may remember that this datapoint caused a bizarre row in which Niantic tried to discredit the Appmagic data cited in last month’s report. We checked, and that data was consistent with Sensor Tower and Data.ai’s estimates, so we’re not sure what all the fuss was about.

Still, Pokémon Go’s earnings of $34.5m in May are still broadly down on the $38-50m range it was posting from July 2022 to March 2023. Let’s see if Niantic tries to argue with this month’s data, shall we…?

May’s top grossing games worldwide 11-20

11. Homescapes (Playrix): $37.9m
12. Goddess of Victory: Nikke (Tencent): $36.3m
13. Clash of Clans (Supercell): $31.5m
14. Monster Strike (Xflag): $29.9m
15. Fishdom (Playrix): $29.3m
16. Fate/Grand Order (Aniplex): $28.8m
17. Township (Playrix): $27.9m
18. Puzzles & Survival (37Games): $27.8m
19. Uma Musume Pretty Derby (Cygames): $27.4m
20. Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Lingxi Games): $26.5m

Notable ups and downs outside the top ten in May include Goddess of Victory: Nikke, which is up nearly $10m month-on-month, and conversely Monster Strike, which dropped by over $10m in revenue compared to April’s numbers.

Puzzles & Survival dropped by around $5m month-on-month, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms dropped by around $9m.

Just outside the top 20, Google Play-only game Night Crows entered the chart just below Lilith’s Rise of Kingdoms, with $23m earned in May, and Monopoly Go earned Scopely a tidy $22.3m in its first full month on the market.

Finally – Netease’s challenger to Fall Guys and Stumble Guys, Eggy Party, seems to have lost a bit of momentum – having posted revenue of just over $30m in March, it slipped to $25.7m in April and was down again in May to $19.5m. It is still China-only, though, so perhaps the dev team is holding some content back for an imminent global launch.
